III. Results: Linear extrapolation

Once we know the linear equations of Despacito and See You Again, we use them to determine the crossing point of both lines. Mathematically this is expressed as $y_{d} = z_{s},$ which gives us,

$$\begin{align} 21.2 x + 2222.9 &= 3.2 x + 2859.7. \tag{21} \end{align} $$

Solving Eq. (21) we get $x=35$. This result tells us that on day 35 both lines intersect. In other words, Despacito reaches (and consequently surpasses) See You Again on day 35. If the calculations started on July 4th, then they will intersect on July 35th. However, since July only has 31 days, then Despacito becomes the most viewed video on YouTube on August 4th, 2017. Finally, to answer in which date Despacito reaches 3 billion views, we set the following expression:

$$\begin{align} 3000 = 21.2 x + 2222.9. \tag{22} \end{align}$$

Solving Eq. (22) we get $x=36$, i.e., on August 5th, Despacito reaches the historical figure of 3 billion views on YouTube. Do you think these results were fulfilled? To find out, I invite you to read: "Integral calculus to predict the future of Despacito," where we predict the date when Despacito reaches 4 billion and 5 billion views in total. Further details of these calculations are given in the Python code.
