When this article was published, Peru had not yet qualified to the World Cup, however, the reasons given here show that it was evident to happen, in particular due to the positive streak Peru was having:

Venezuela vs Peru: On March 23rd, 2017, Peru faced Venezuela. The chamos were leading 2-0 in the first half, but Peru managed to draw the game in the second half.
Peru vs Uruguay: On March 28th, 2017, Peru beat Uruguay 2-1 with a charrúas' shot that hit the post in the last minute.
Yellow card: In the Peru vs. Uruguay match, Corzo, Guerrero and Tapia accumulated their second yellow card and thus they couldn't be in the match against Bolivia; however, thanks to this they were present against Ecuador, which was a more complicated match.
TAS: On August 29th, 2017, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (formerly known in french as the Tribunal Arbitral du Sport, TAS) ratified the nullity of Bolivia's victory over Peru on September 1st, 2016. Therefore, Peru was granted the points of that game. The reason was that Bolivia used a player who was not legitimate to play.
Peru vs. Bolivia: On August 31st, 2017, Peru beat Bolivia 2-1. In the last minute of the game, Bolivia missed a direct shot on goal.
Ecuador vs Peru: On September 5th, 2017, Peru beat Ecuador 2-1 in Quito, a city in which Peru had never won before. In such game, Peru finished with 10 men and despite this, Ecuador could not draw.
Argentina vs Peru: On October 5th, 2017, Peru drew with Argentina 0-0 in La Bombonera. Argentina had 22 shots on goal and Peru only 2; moreover, there was a shot kicked by Messi that hit the post.
Peru vs. Colombia: On October 10th, 2017, Peru drew with Colombia 1-1. Peru's goal came from an indirect free kick that ended up being a direct kick only because the Colombian goalkeeper jumped and touched the ball.
The last date: On October 10th, 2017, against all odds, Venezuela beat Paraguay in Asuncion. If Paraguay would have won, it would have qualified. Moreover, Brazil thrashed Chile 3-0 in Sao Paulo. Losing 2-1 was enough for Chile to qualify.
New Zealand: On November 11th and 15th, 2017, Peru played its playoff matches against New Zealand, which was ranked 122nd in the FIFA ranking. It was the weakest team out of those that reached the playoffs. Moreover, its star player was injured before the match against Peru.
